Inhalation Sedation: for Children
at our new Children's Clinic at
Allander Dental Care.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S CLINIC

At The Children's Clinic we’re excited to now offer Inhalation Sedation for Children in-house at our practice.

Many children feel nervous about dental treatment. Inhalation sedation is a safe and effective way to help anxious children feel more relaxed and comfortable during their visit, making treatment a more positive experience.

This new chapter means more possibilities for families and more happy, confident smiles in our community.

Benefits of Inhalation
Sedation

If you are interested in learning more about The Children's Clinic & Inhalation Sedation with Dr Sarah McDonald please get in touch and a member of our team can talk through your options.

Helps Reduce Anxiety

Inhalation Sedation helps children feel calm and relaxed during their dental appointment.

It can make treatment feel much less worrying, helping children who are nervous or anxious to have a more comfortable experience.

Improves Cooperation
& Confidence

When children feel more relaxed, they are often better able to cooperate with the dentist.

Positive experiences can also help build their confidence, making future dental visits feel easier and less stressful.

Takes Effect quickly &
Wears Off Rapidly

Inhalation sedation enables many children to have the dental treatment they need while staying awake, avoiding the risks and longer recovery associated with a general anaesthetic in many cases.

The sedative gas begins working within a few minutes, helping your child feel relaxed almost straight away.

Once the treatment is finished, the effects wear off quickly after breathing normal oxygen, allowing most children to return to their usual activities soon afterwards.

Your Child Remains Awake & Able To Communicate Throughout Treatment

Although your child will feel relaxed, they will remain awake, aware of their surroundings, and able to talk to the dental team.

This allows the dentist to communicate with them throughout the procedure, helping to ensure they remain comfortable and reassured.

What might
my child feel?

WHAT MIGHT MY CHILD FEEL?

During inhalation sedation, your child may feel:

• Calm and relaxed
• Light or floaty
• Slightly sleepy, although they will remain awake
• Warm
• Tingling in their hands or feet

These sensations are normal and usually wear off quickly once the sedation has stopped.

More about Inhalation
Sedation

Some commonly asked questions about Inhalation Sedation and the process we follow at the practice.

01

How quickly does it work?

• Inhalation sedation usually takes effect within a few minutes.

• Recovery is rapid and usually takes only a few minutes after treatment has finished.
• It is suitable for most children.

Inhalation sedation is very safe when provided by trained dental professionals. Your
child will be closely monitored throughout treatment.

02

What happens during treatment?

A small, comfortable nosepiece is placed over your child's nose and they will be asked to breathe normally. As the sedation takes effect, your child will begin to feel more at ease.

Once your child is settled, dental treatment can begin. At the end of the appointment,
your child will breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes before leaving the surgery.

03

Appointments

Most children will require at least two appointments.

04

Assessment Appointment

The dentist will assess your child and discuss the planned dental treatment, as well as whether inhalation sedation is the most appropriate option.

05

Treatment Appointment(s)

Dental treatment will then be carried out using inhalation sedation.

The dentist and dental team are specially trained to provide inhalation sedation and
will closely monitor your child throughout the procedure.

06

Before the Appointment

• Please contact the practice if your child develops a cold or blocked nose, as inhalation sedation may not work effectively.

• Written consent must be provided by a parent or guardian with parental responsibility before treatment can take place.

07

On the day of Appointment

• Your child should wear loose, comfortable clothing.

• Fasting is not required. Your child should have a light meal approximately 1–2
hours before the appointment.

• Avoid greasy or oily foods, as these may make your child feel nauseous during
treatment.

• Your child must be accompanied by a responsible adult with parental responsibility.

• Please inform the dentist if there have been any changes to your child's health or
medication since their last visit.

08

After the Treatment

Most children recover very quickly following inhalation sedation and can return to their usual activities later the same day.

However, we recommend avoiding vigorous physical activities such as swimming,
cycling and active sports until the following day.

Please ask your dentist if you have any questions about returning to school or other
activities after treatment.
